And so it was that in 1932 Diego was born—the last of the "Vigilant" family—arriving at home (as was the custom back then) in early March, while snow still lay on Mount Cuar. The "Ca' Diego" unit at Villaggio Canada is dedicated to him—a tribute and a memory to be cherished for years to come.
Raised under the guidance of his mother Maria—the family's anchor while his father sought his fortune in Colombia—he learned early on the value of sacrifice and the deep bond with the land, tending herds at pasture and living by the ancient rhythms of alpine life. The 1976 earthquake destroyed the historic family home built in 1668—a stone-and-wood complex that Diego was unable to salvage. Out of that loss came the decision to purchase the unit at Villaggio Canada that now bears his name.
You may not have the chance to meet him in person, as he has since retired to a quiet life on the plains, but you will experience his presence through the intricate wood carvings and inlay work of the furnishings. He welcomes you with memories of the original family manor—which had spanned three floors since 1668, featuring the "Volt di Cimel" archway, post-WWII renovations, and a complex of stone-and-wood structures with mosaic floors.
The home is laid out over two levels. The entrance opens into the living area, featuring a stove and an open-plan kitchen equipped with an induction cooktop, oven, and dishwasher. Two steps lead up to the sleeping area: three bedrooms (two with double beds and one with bunk beds) and a bathroom with a shower, providing a total of six sleeping spaces.
Heading downstairs leads to the laundry area and the cellar, where you can store bicycles and access the back of the garden. Beneath a wooden veranda, you can enjoy the peace of the hamlet, pick vegetables from the organic garden, and take in a stunning view of Mount Cuar and the surrounding area.
The accommodation is situated in a village that stands as a testament to the strong bond shared with Friulian emigrants—who, like the owner Diego, never forgot their homeland—and to the generosity of the Canadian government, which, alongside "Fogolar Furlan" and "Famee Furlane" associations, sent tangible aid for the reconstruction efforts.
Pets are welcome and have access to a small, fenced garden at the back of the house.
Its location makes it an ideal base for immersing yourself in the life of the Forgaria community: it is just a short walk from the shops, services, and events that bring the village to life, especially during the summer season.
